The Gay Almanac The Lesbian Almanac compiled by the National Museum and Archive of Lesbian and Gay History Berkeley, trade paper, $16.95

Reviewed by Bob Roehr

The Gay Almanac and The Lesbian Almanac claim to be "The most comprehensive reference source available" in their subtitles. The National Museum and Archive that compiled them is a program of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center of New York City.

Rather than being "comprehensive," they are slipshod views of the community as seen through a New York-cen-

tric prism. Nowhere is this more obvious than in its use of photos—virtually all drawn from the Archive and shot in the Big Apple. Events and activities elsewhere, particularly in California, are not given the measure of balanced coverage history would indicate.

Reference source books are a genre most easily dated. This pair are in need of a facelift even before they hit the shelves. They appear to have been largely completed more than a year ago their bibliographic entries end with 1994 copyrights.

The Human Rights Campaign Fund has not had its name truncated. Log Cabin Re-

publicans is not found among the chapters on activism or politics, but Pride at Work: The National Gay, Lesbian, Bi, and Transgender Labor Organization, is. It is based in North Amherst, Massachusetts.

The "AIDS primer" erroneously states that "50 percent of all new HIV infections are among women." The statistic may be true for New York City, but it is definitely not true for the nation as a whole. The most recent Centers for Disease Control data places it at 19 percent. The National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) is not mentioned, nor is the remarkable new class of HIV medications know as protease inhibitors.

Gaps and omissions are rampant. “Know your enemies" misses the Christian Coalition and Pat Robertson's other operations. "Gay/Bisexual Composers" lists the obscure Marc Blitzstein but not the renowned Benjamin Britten, or New Yorker John Corigliano, perhaps the best-selling living American composer. Among those "Performers who died of AIDS" they somehow missed the star whose illness rocketed the epidemic onto

the front pages of the media and into America's national conscience-Rock Hudson.

These almanacs exemplify the meaning of the words "vanity press."
